ASL for Beginners

Cost: $100

Description: This true beginner course introduces the basics of American Sign Language. Students will learn the manual alphabet, numbers, everyday greetings, feelings, family vocabulary, colors, and simple verbs. Emphasis is placed on visual skills, facial expressions, and ASL grammar (Topic–Comment order) to support basic communication. By the end of this course, students will be able to introduce themselves, ask and answer simple WH/Yes–No questions, and engage in short conversations using everyday vocabulary.

By the end of Level 1, students will be able to:

  • Fingerspell the alphabet and recognize short words (2–5 letters).
  • Introduce themselves and exchange basic personal information.
  • Use common greetings, classroom survival signs, and polite expressions.
  • Express simple feelings (e.g., happy, tired, hungry).
  • Identify and describe family members and people.
  • Use numbers 1–20 in basic contexts (age, dates, counting).
  • Ask and answer simple WH-questions (who, what, where, when, how many).
  • Understand and apply ASL word order basics (Topic–Comment).
  • Hold short, 1–2 sentence conversations with classmates.
