Kupuna Community Outreach teaches ASL to seniors at Meheula Vista in Mililani

On March 29, 2019 the CSC was invited to teach ASL to a group of seniors at Meheula Vista in Mililani to show residents how to greet and interact with a new deaf resident, Laura. Kupuna Klub president Kimyo and other members Tomi and Harriet, joined instructors Linda and Jeff Lambrecht in sharing their language and culture with residents. Laura was very grateful for the visit and said, “Come back again!” Resident manager, Sherry, said she is looking forward to using what she learned to get to know Laura better.

If you, or someone you know, is isolated in a care home or similar facility where staff and other residents don’t sign, please contact the CSC. We’d be happy to do outreach and teach a 2 hour ASL and Deaf Culture session. Mahalo to Laura for allowing us to use her name and photo for this article!
