The Academic English Class is designed for Deaf adults who already have a basic understanding of the written English language.
In the course, students will expand their vocabulary, develop word decoding skills along with competency in using correct grammatical English structure in writing. Topics covered include parts of speech, simple verb tenses, question formation, simple and compound sentences, and sentence mechanics. Students will learn strategies for reading comprehension, writing for basic interpersonal communication, and increase their understanding of frequently used idioms and metaphors. Reading materials include news articles about current events and high interest topics.
The class is designed for those preparing for higher education or employment that requires higher levels of English skills. Class activities include journaling, texting, interactive smart board work, individual, partner and small group work.
